ASRL Open 2020 Mollymook Confirmation

ASRL Statement - 17 January 2020

As previously noted your ASRL Committee have been in contact with all the stakeholders re the suitability of Mollymook hosting Team Navy ASRL Open since bushfires devastated parts of the NSW South Coast.

We have now received written confirmation from the RFS and Shoalhaven City Council letting us know that Mollymook is the preferred venue for the Open. However, we are currently updating a final safety plan in consultation with local authorities, and we expect this to be completed in the next 72 hours.

This is encouraging news and we ask boaties from across Australia to attend the Open and support the local area by bringing the economic impact to the region that comes with such a major event.

With all fires contained and rain falling in the area things have taken a major turn for the better.

We’d also like to give a shout out to the Elouera SLSC and Sutherland Shire Council who didn’t hesitate to put their collective hands up as our plan B if the fires were going to stop the Open from proceeding at Mollymook.

With awesome support from Team Navy, Destination NSW, Shoalhaven City Council and the Mollymook SLSC we are excited to be heading to Mollymook for the 2020 ASRL Open.

If your looking to support those affected by the bushfires the best thing we can do is head to Mollymook and drop some coin into the local economy. We are excited to bring our economic benefit to the area and show Australia that the Shoalhaven area is back open for business. We encourage everyone within our movement to come to the ASRL Open and provide their support to the locals with your attendance as the community desperately need the help.

Should you have any questions please feel free to email asrlopen2020@asrl.com.au or personal message Team Navy ASRL on Facebook

ASRL Open 2020 Update

ASRL Statement - 6 January 2020

We have all seen the devastation which is currently occurring around the country by bush fires. Our thoughts are with all those affected by these fires and especially our members who have been directly impacted.

Many of us on the George Bass Surfboat Marathon witnessed first hand what effect these fires can have.

With the Team Navy ASRL Open being held at Mollymook in approximately 5 weeks time the ASRL is aware of the situation in that area. We are in contact with all stakeholders including the RFS and local authorities. We are currently talking and listening, taking advise as the situation develops.

Our strong intention is to hold the Open as currently planned at Mollymook but we are also working on an alternative if there is still a fire threat or the local area is not ready to host such a large event.

Due to logistical constraints we will need to make the call three weeks prior to the event to give our members, officials, host club and organisers enough time to make the Open a success. Our back up venue will suit all those flying in through Sydney which we feel will be the vast majority of fly in travellers. At this early stage we are unable to publicise the alternative venue as official approval has not been granted but be assured we will keep you all informed as more information comes to hand.

As previously stated our preferred option is to hold the event in Mollymook and have the economic impact that the Team Navy ASRL Open brings with it to benefit this hard hit region. If the decision has to be made to move away from Mollymook, our intention would be of offer the 2021 ASRL Open to Mollymook. If any of our members can't retrieve deposits paid on accommodation, it might be possible to move the booking to 2021.

Thanks for your understanding in these testing times. The decision will be made with the best interests of our membership and the local area.

Should you have any concerns please feel free to email asrlopen2020@asrl.com.au or personal message Team Navy ASRL on Facebook

VALE - Ross and Andrew POWELL

The Australian Surf Rowers League is devastated to hear the tragic news of the drowning of two highly respected members of the Port Campbell SLSC in Victoria. Andrew Powell, 32, and his 71-year-old father Ross, both experienced lifesavers, attempted to help a 30-year-old male when he got into difficulty while wading in heavy surf at the mouth of Sherbrook River about 10.40am on Sunday 21 April 2019.

The two men, who were Life Members of the Port Campbell Surf Lifesaving Club, were unable to be saved when their boat flipped and they died at the scene.

A third member, Phillip Younis, is in The Alfred hospital in a serious but stable condition, and our thoughts are with this member and his family and friends.

Andrew Powell, who joined the SES at 16, was also a dedicated farmer like his father and won young farmer of the year in 2017.

The men’s family released a statement through Victoria Police in recognition of their bravery and selflessness:

"Ross (Po) dedicated much of his life to contributing to his community. But above all, he was a cherished husband to Val, a dedicated father to Brett, Natalie, Dale, Kerryn and Andy, and dearly loved brother to Marea. He was very much loved and respected by many. Andrew (Andy) was always by his dad’s side and a beloved partner to Amber, son and brother. We will miss our beautiful, big-hearted Andy and were so proud of the person he was – gentle, compassionate, loving and selfless – like his father. We are heartbroken. Our thoughts and love are with Phillip (Fuzz) Younis and his family whilst he recovers."

ASRL Open 2019

We are happy to announce the draft order of events for the 2019 ASRL Open! Please see the attached.

Please note that Reserve Women are now with the Reserve Men on Friday in block two. We see this as a positive move for the event. Some key reasons are;
* The U23 Men seeding (Interstate crews) was deemed as an unfair process due to the lower numbers. The seeding process for Reserve Men and Women due to the larger entry numbers makes more sense than with categories with lower numbers
* We hope that some Masters crews will give Reserve Women a crack in the afternoon block of racing on Friday
* We see having the U23 Men on Saturday on the same day as all of the other U19 and U23 crews as a positive change for competitor engagement

Please note that as per previous years, the program is always subject to change due to weather conditions, final entry numbers etc.

Entries are NOW OPEN! Get your Competition Officer to visit carnival.sls.com.au/ and enter via 'ASRL' section.

The 2019 ASRL Open is proudly supported by Destination NSW and Team Navy. Visit Sydney.com for travelling information including accommodation options.

ASRL Open 2018

We said we would't run from surf and we didn't BUT boy what a weekend and that is due to many people holding hands and working hard to keep everything rolling along!

Our Referee Tamara Brawn and Sectionals Peter van Duren and Bobo White lead a great team of Officials who to the last one we owe a huge vote of thanks. The girls and ladies in the Bunker doing the draws didn't see the sun for 3 days which is an amazing effort and the pressure they are under has to be witnessed to understand.

Our Water Safety IRB Crews led by Peter Burst were tireless and the Safety Response Team led by Joel Wiseman did a great job in the way they monitored and communicated during the three days.

The Elouera Surf Club and their band of workers didn't stop for the duration. The Sutherland Shire Council and Staff were wonderful to work with and the Shire Lifeguards, you are a great team of professionals. Not just in the way you assisted us in decision making but your rescue skill out on the water is first class. Thanks to all those who assisted and competed, creating such a great weekend for all.
